How to Prepare for Driving on Icy Roads

Driving on icy roads can't always be avoided. If we are experiencing heavy winter weather and you still need to get to work in the morning, you may find yourself stressing about the drive. We know that driving during severe winter weather can be concerning, which is why always trying to be prepared before you hit the road can help you tackle the challenge and get to your destination safely.

If you haven't already, you may want to consider looking into winter tires. Winter tires can be stored in your garage or other facility nearby your home and can be put on when needed. Winter tires can allow you to get much more traction on the road and will be dependable even during severe weather conditions. Also, if you are planning on traveling, be sure to check road conditions beforehand. Some areas may require tire chains by law for certain vehicle types.

Another important way to prepare for driving in winter weather is by always making sure that your vehicle is well maintained and in top working condition. Have your car's battery checked for charge, check all lights, have the brakes inspected, and double check that your defroster is working. It is also a good idea to check that your car's windshield wipers are in good working condition.

We also recommend that you have a winter emergency kit packed in your vehicle when driving during the colder weather. Items to include in this kit consist of a flashlight, spare tire, jack, jumper cables, blankets, hand warmers, cell phone charger, extra jackets/warm clothing, flares, water, non-perishable foods, and anything else you may think will come in handy.

One last tip - if do find yourself in a situation on the road where your tires lose traction, don't step hard on the brakes or accelerator. Take your foot off of the pedals and hold the steering wheel tightly until your vehicle slows down.
